Diversity within Greek Music

The music of Greece is pretty diverse and celebrated. It has been observed that old greek music ( ?????? ???????? ??????? ) shares quite a few similarities with the Middle Eastern music, particularly the music from Cyprus. The modern greek music ( ???????? ???????? ??????? ) still contains a lot of scenes from the Hellenic culture. Even in the present day, Greek music is often played at festivals, parties and at performances that show the ethnic Greek dances.

Elaborating more on the history, the Greek music extends way back into ancient Greece, since music happened to be an integral part of the Greek theatre. Later on, with the invasion of the Romans, Byzantine Empire and the Eastern Europeans, the style and form of Greek music has changed a lot. Coming back to the 19th century, the composers such as Spyridon Xyndas, Nikolaos Mantzaros and Spyridon Samaras, revitalised the art of music. Simply put, the Greek music extends from the Renaissance times, all the way to the modern styles.

If we were to go according to the historical accounts, the mixed-gender choruses would perform for celebration, entertainment and spiritual purposes. The instruments they use were diverse in nature and include the string instrument called the lyre, as well as the double reed aulos.
